Winifred J. Harley College of Health Sciences

A 56 year legacy of United Methodist nursing education that is looking to the future to rebuild in Ganta what was destroyed in one terrible year of the 16 year civil war.

Brief History:

  • 1963 – First diploma nurses graduate from WJH School of Nursing
  • 1963 – First diploma nurses graduate from WJH School of Nursing
  • 2000 – WJH incorporated into United Methodist University-College of Health Sciences (UMU-CHS)
  • 2003 – WJH–CHS moved to Monrovia due to civil war fighting in Ganta
  • 2006 – WJH-CHS returns to Ganta

Housing Needs:

  • For appropriate and adequate housing for the current students
  • For students in the CHS expanded allied health program
  • For UMU students when some of their programs move to Ganta

For Current Students:

  • There are 4 dormitories
  • One dorm is occupied and the facilities are adequate – Groover Hall
  • Two dorms are occupied but the roofs leak, and the plumbing and electricity are inadequate – The ‘Hostel’ and Adam’s Hall.
  • One dorm has no roof, windows, or utilities. ‘Jacob’s Hall’

Expanded CHS programs will create the need for more student housing.

  • Dental nurse practitioner
  • Laboratory technician
  • X-ray technician
  • Midwifery
  • Physician’s assistant
